HOW TO FIND REAL TREASURE: 

What Two Parables Teach Us About What Truly Matters

 Jesus told two short parables in Matthew 13 that pack a powerful truth. A man stumbles upon buried treasure in a field. A merchant finds a pearl of extraordinary value. Both of them sell everything they have to obtain what they found. These stories are not about financial investment strategies. They are about something far more valuable: spiritual treasure.

What Are These Parables Actually About?

 A parable is a story that uses an earthly illustration to explain a spiritual truth. Jesus begins both of these parables with the same phrase: "The kingdom of heaven is like." He is drawing a comparison between these stories and the discovery of something spiritually transforming.

 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it." - Matthew 13:44-46 English Standard Version (ESV)

 These parables are about how we discover, value, and receive spiritual treasure. And they reveal two important truths.

Truth 1: Spiritual Treasure Is Revealed in Unexpected Ways

 Neither the man in the field nor the pearl merchant was expecting to find what He found that day. The man in the field was not even on his own property. He stumbled upon something buried in the ground. The merchant was searching for pearls, but the one he found exceeded anything he had anticipated.

Why Was Buried Treasure So Common in the Ancient World?

 In ancient Israel, there were no banks or safety deposit boxes. When armies invaded, which happened frequently in that region, people would bury their valuables in fields to protect them. If they were killed in the conflict, no one else knew where the treasure was. Finding buried treasure was not as far-fetched as it sounds to us today.

God Uses Unexpected Circumstances to Reveal Spiritual Truth

 There is no five-step plan for discovering spiritual treasure. God may use sickness, loss, anxiety, personal failure, or a broken relationship to bring you to a closer alignment with Scripture. When you begin to see your circumstances through the lens of God's Word, that is when the treasure becomes visible.

 Sometimes the very thing causing you the most pain is the path God is using to reveal something of eternal value. The treasure is not always found in the easy moments. It is often found in the hard ones.

Truth 2: 

Spiritual Treasure Requires Releasing What You Are Already Holding

 Both men in the parables sold everything they had to obtain the treasure they found. Whatever they owned before that moment had value to them. But when they discovered the true treasure, there was no comparison. They let go of the lesser thing to gain the greater thing.

 This is the principle Jesus is teaching: you cannot hold tightly to lesser treasure and still receive the true treasure. Your hands have to be open.

What Does the Bible Say About How We Receive This Treasure?

 "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9 English Standard Version (ESV)

 Salvation, the forgiveness of sins, and eternal life are not earned. They are received by grace through faith. That means no amount of effort, religious activity, or moral achievement can acquire this treasure. It is a free gift from God. The moment we start believing we earned it, we have missed the point entirely.

How Do You Actually Receive Spiritual Treasure?

 Looking at what both men in the parables did, there are three practical steps worth considering.

STEP 1: REASON IT OUT

 Both men compared what they had with what they found and quickly concluded the new treasure was worth far more. We need to do the same kind of reasoning with spiritual treasure.

 Can you write a check to pay for your sins? Can any act of goodness remove your guilt before God? Can any tradition or ritual make your sins disappear? Scripture is clear that the answer is no. The only remedy for sin is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. When you weigh that against anything this world offers, there is no comparison.

STEP 2: FEEL IT

 The man who found the treasure in the field did not drag himself reluctantly to sell his possessions. He went with joy. He knew what he was getting in return was worth far more than what he was giving up.

 The lesser treasures of this life, money, health, reputation, relationships, all have a short shelf life when it comes to joy. Money runs out. Health fades. Reputations crumble. Relationships break. But the treasure found in Christ addresses every one of those things at the deepest level.

 - No wealth here? You have wealth stored in heaven.

- Health failing? A resurrected body is waiting for you.

- Reputation damaged? In Christ, your reputation is His reputation.

- Relationships broken? Restoration awaits in eternity.

 The Gospel is not a burden to carry. It is a treasure to celebrate. It should bring genuine joy.

STEP 3: ACT ON IT

 The men in the parables did not just admire the treasure. They acted. They sold what they had and made the exchange. If your hands are full of lesser things, you cannot embrace the greater thing.

 The disciples understood this. Peter, Andrew, James, and John left their boats and nets on the Sea of Galilee. Matthew walked away from his tax collector's booth. Paul gave up a rising career as a respected religious leader. They all released the lesser treasure to gain the true one.

What Are You Trusting In?

 It is worth asking yourself honestly what you are holding onto. Is it finances? Politics? Religion? Family? Reputation? Good works? None of those things can remedy the sin problem. None of them can secure your eternity. Only the treasure found in Jesus Christ can do that.

 When you live with an open hand, something changes. You become more generous because you are no longer gripping your resources as your source of security. You forgive more readily because you know you have been forgiven. You love others more freely because you know you were loved first. You carry a deeper joy because Christ meets every need of the human heart, both now and for eternity.

LIFE APPLICATION

 This week, take an honest inventory of what you are holding most tightly. It might be a financial plan, a relationship, a reputation, or even a religious routine you are depending on for your sense of standing before God. Identify one thing you have been gripping as a source of security or worth, and intentionally loosen your hold on it. Pray and ask God to help you release it and trust Him as your true treasure instead.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:

1.  - What am I depending on most for my sense of security, identity, or worth right now?
2. - If that thing were taken away, would my joy and peace remain? Why or why not?
3. - Is there something I am holding so tightly that it is keeping me from fully receiving what God has for me?
4. - What would it look like this week to live with an open hand toward God and toward others?

 The treasure of Jesus Christ is real, it is available, and it is worth everything. The question is whether you are willing to release what is in your hands to receive it.
